LONG-TERM STRATEGY / FOUNDATION PARTNERSHIPS

Grants & Foundation Pathways

Real grant starting points and a proposed annual Panther Opportunity Grant concept, pending approvals.

GRANTS / DIFFERENT TIME HORIZONS

Immediate project asks. Long-term opportunity.

A grant cannot be treated as guaranteed referendum replacement money. The best opportunity is a defined, eligible project with an approved applicant, evidence of need, measurable outcomes and an itemized budget. Every grant below requires current guideline review before applying.

KNOWN LOCAL FUNDS · ASK FIRST

Elwood Education Foundation funds

Madison County Community Foundation lists both an Elwood Education Foundation Endowment Fund and Pass-through Fund. Ask who currently administers grants, which uses are allowed, whether they could host a separately restricted annual student opportunity fund, and what approvals are needed.

LOCAL PROJECT GRANTS

Greater Madison County Community Foundation

Its published grants support eligible charitable projects, including education. Confirm fit for a defined student-access initiative, not broad recurring sports or transportation operations. The applicant generally must be a nonprofit or governmental entity, or use a permitted fiscal sponsor.

REGIONAL FACILITY-BASED

Walmart Spark Good Local Grants

Published $250–$5,000 facility grants accept eligible schools and nonprofits that serve the same area. A school-authorized, specific equipment or participation-access project may be worth screening for eligibility. Do not apply as an individual.

SPORTS-SPECIFIC · QUALIFY FIRST

DICK'S Sports Matter support

The DICK'S application portal discusses school/team sponsorships and donations, requiring an organization, request details and budget. Its larger Sports Matter foundation grants are invitation-only; do not represent them as open competitive funding.

PROPOSED • NOT A CURRENT PROGRAM

The Panther Opportunity Grant.

A possible annual application-based fund for approved student-athletics and extracurricular needs. The long-term goal is predictable, transparent annual support, while keeping urgent operating fundraising separate.

01

Meet the foundation

Confirm board priorities, eligible uses, fiscal handling, endowment versus pass-through, and who controls awards.

02

Define award types

Examples to test: equipment that can be shared, participation access, accessible transport for activities, arts or club opportunities.

03

Secure annual donors

Ask alumni classes and businesses to adopt a yearly commitment; do not promise interest yield without fund documents.

04

Publish fair criteria

Application, allowable costs, documented need, equity rules, review committee, award and post-award reporting.

Example only: 20 sponsors giving $500 each annually would create a $10,000 annual pool before fees and administrative considerations. An endowment would need significantly more principal for sustainable distributions.
GRANT PROPOSAL CHECKLIST

Make each ask fundable.

Eligibility

Applicant legal name, tax/EIN or NCES identifier, fiscal sponsor if allowed, approved recipient.

Defined scope

One program access barrier, student group, or equipment need with dates and outcomes.

Real cost

Vendor quote and total project cost, in-kind commitments, funding gap and restricted uses.

Impact

Participation retained, students served, cost per participant, equitable access and final reporting.

Evidence

Approval email, signed award agreement, deposit confirmation and reporting deadline.

Public claims

Only announce awarded money when the grantor and approved recipient authorize that announcement.
